The Dean of Humanities and Sciences What if we made it all Smaller, shrunk it down To what we can take In with a single glance, Cleared the place Of everything extraneous, Made the whole shebang Simpler, pruned back All superfluences not Deemed utterly necessary To the stated mission, Which I have right here, Which says that anything That cannot justify itself Must be cut away Lest it leech power From the turbine Spinning at the center, Don’t you see that This profligacy is what Is sapping us, Wouldn’t it be good If all this could fit Here on my desk, where I could take care of it.
