The Dean of Humanities and Sciences
What if we made it all
Smaller, shrunk it down
To what we can take
In with a single glance,
Cleared the place
Of everything extraneous,
Made the whole shebang
Simpler, pruned back
All superfluences not
Deemed utterly necessary
To the stated mission,
Which I have right here,
Which says that anything
That cannot justify itself
Must be cut away
Lest it leech power
From the turbine
Spinning at the center,
Don’t you see that
This profligacy is what
Is sapping us,
Wouldn’t it be good
If all this could fit
Here on my desk, where
I could take care of it.
