Why
Why
What God gave us
We deprive one another of —
Good food, fresh air, clean water,
This light on her wedding band
On the ring finger of her right hand
Because the man who slipped it on
Her left ring finger is dead.
She took it off and put it on the right one
In order to wed herself to widowhood.
Tonight she holds a glass of wine slightly
Better than she can afford
On this, their anniversary.
Why should she deprive herself
Of what God gave us out of love —
Wine pressed from grapes
That swelled with sun and dew,
Each a blue microcosm of earth?
Leave that to others to.
