To Be Quiet
To Be Quiet
Working in that school for kids
Who’d been kicked out
Of the other school,
I flinched to hear them make
Jokes about Anne Frank
And ovens and how many
Jews does it take…
They’d never met a Jew. They had
Met me, though, though
I didn’t tell them I was one,
Being only half-Jewish.
My left side, I've always imagined.
But that's not why
I didn't tell them, of course.
I should have told them.
Instead I told them
To be quiet.
