The Loneliness of Heavenly Bodies
The Loneliness of Heavenly Bodies
Who’s lonelier, the sun or the moon?
The moon with its pockmarked face,
A teen girl who hogs the bathroom
Because she can’t stop picking at her acne?
Or the sun, blasting away in all directions,
The fiery boy tackled in study hall
Who catches the principal on the chin?
Or maybe loneliest are the stars
Who aren’t part of any constellation,
The incels of the night sky.
But surely the earth is lonelier
Than all of these, the emerald earth
Who wants to reach out and touch
The moon’s scarred face, who longs to
Embrace the sun the way
The school nurse longs to hug the boy
Who everyone thinks is so dangerous
But who she hasn't forgotten is someone’s son.
