The Forest Before Us
The Forest Before Us
The deer were scared
Of norhing.
Antlers big
As chandeliers
Threw a bony light over
The kitchen-colored leaves.
Night fell hand
In hand with snow
Like cousins
Jumping off a bridge.
I'm not saying that
There was no fear.
In the dark the trees
Reached for each other.
"Brother?"
"Brother."
And mice rose
On owls' wings.
