The First Cup
The First Cup
The first cup was fashioned of flesh
A woman formed a cup with her hands
And dipped it into a stream
And drank it empty
And dipped and drank again
Invention of necessity
From this model
Clay was shaped and baked
On its sides patterns were inscribed
It was given a handle to hold it by
What followed were countless cups and mugs
The chalice that caught Christ's blood
The cup she made of her hands
The cup you last drank from
Is a descendant of
When thirsty
Without a cup at hand
Say when running through the park
You can always form one with your hands
Hold it under the fountain that never stops flowing
And drink from the oldest of vessels
