The Diver
The Diver
I think I’ll stay down here
Where things are simpler.
Men I trained
Gaze down into the green water,
Waiting for me to surface
With the first body.
They know I’ll let them
Know if there’s trouble.
There’s no trouble.
The man and woman are still
In their seatbelts.
They look like they think
They might still get
Where they were going.
I climb into the backseat
Like a hitchhiker.
The girl looks at me
Wonderingly.
Now is the time I should rise
With her through leagues
Of lightening water.
I used to believe air
Was the heaven of the drowned
And we divers their angels.
But I’ve decided to stay down here
Where things are simpler.
