The Delegates of Snow
The Delegates of Snow
Send the delegates of snow into summer.
This line woke me up, heard by that part of me
That is always concerned with writing
Lest I lose a poem like salt dissolving
In the water of a dream. What does it mean,
Though, send the delegates of snow
Into summer? I picture men dressed all
In white entering a country hostile to them.
It takes effort to maintain their composure
At the glaring conference table, these snowmen
Come to a sunny country. They lay out
Their demands with the calm of those who know
They're in the right. Something to do with
The contested border. In the end they come
To some sort of agreement, but summer
Will never not be at war with winter, winter
At war with summer. And it seems that in order
To keep this tenuous peace, a dreamer must
Send the delegates of snow into summer.
