Pain
Pain
Pain loves us.
When the body cries out to the mind
The mind brings the body to the ER
Where the CAT scan confirms what the symptoms suggest.
Pain is how the body saves itself.
If it wasn’t for pain we’d keel over
Into a lover’s lap.
First they’d laugh,
Then scream.
We'd croak in the choir mid-note,
Drift over the double yellow lines,
Be found dead anywhere
We can be found alive.
How often pain has saved you,
Pain your angel,
With wasp stingers for fingers
And wings like buzz saws,
Each feather the tooth of a blade.
When you feel pain’s bitter breath on your neck,
You might as well turn around and welcome it,
Then drop to your knees in praise.
If you don’t
It will make you.
