The walnuts stain the roadsides here With shadows that abide at noon. In late summer the walnuts are The first to turn, like the first People in the crowd to hear it. In winter, one sees the halved shells Lying on the ground. Hollowed out, They look to me like the faces Of snowy owls looking down.
