The first birds of dawn are brave Like those early Irish monks Who went to sea with nothing But faith to float them. It is they who open the day Like the janitors who open schools, And like the children who pour In through the doors, we hardly Think of them. One morning we’ll wake late And realize all the birds are gone. Then we’ll have to sing to each other.
