Fear
Outside Anytown three neglected horses stand
In a pasture no one rides them in autumn
The wind might bring them a few crabapples
They wouldn’t have otherwise been able to reach
In summer the earth brings them grass in her arms
In winter a farmer who pities them brings them hay
One of the horses is white and fears disappearing in snow
One of the horses is black and fears disappearing in the dark
One of the horses is brown and fears disappearing into the ground
The white one is only afraid in winter
The black one is only afraid at night
The brown one is afraid all the time
