Depression
I remember the first time I felt it. It was evening. Farmers were opening The land like a cellar door, Tearing the fallow fields up Like sheets for bandages, Turning over the black page Upon which would be scribbled The alphabet of corn. Dad was in the cab tractor, The furrows between us Like widening waves. It was then the thought Came to me — how sad It is to be on earth.
