Caught
When, after making the decision
She had made so many times
For the final time, after taking
The Lyft to the bridge, lying
To the driver about being
A tourist, after picking a side -
- the sea - and walking
Against the current of cars
Roaring into the city,
After passing the signs
With numbers to call,
After throwing her phone
Over the side so
She wouldn’t be tempted to,
Her last ambiguous texts
Sent in the Lyft, after standing
A long time, staring
Through the chain-link fence,
After finally climbing it,
As fast as she could,
In the embarrassment of
Someone peeing in public,
After the slightest hesitation
At the top, and then,
Impossible how easy,
The falling, she was caught
In the net a millionaire
Who’d lost his daughter
This way and so had paid
To be slung hammock-like
Under the bridge, she lay
In shock at not
Falling further,
While, high above her,
People were shouting,
So that she knew that
Soon they would come
To rescue her, though
She’d already been rescued,
So that there was nothing
To do but to be rocked
As she had been some
Long ago summer
She only now remembered
In an uncle’s arms.
